Composer, pianist, improviser, and producer, Fabrizio Rat develops a transversal artistic practice that spans contemporary music, jazz, electronic music, and techno.
His creative work focuses on the articulation between acoustic and electronic sound—particularly through the prepared piano, transformed acoustic instruments, and analog synthesizers—as well as on the relationship between human gesture, machine, repetition, and improvisation.
He is mainly known for his solo live act La Machina, an impressive performance exploring the border between human and machine, acoustic and electronic music.
His live shows have been acclaimed in major clubs and festivals across Europe, South America, Japan, and Russia, with highlights including the closing night of Trans Musicales in Rennes, the Dance Arena of Exit Festival in Serbia, as well as the Teatro Colón and Under Club in Buenos Aires.
He projects the piano, a classical and romantic instrument par excellence, into the hypnotic and powerful soundscape of techno music. He relentlessly plays and transforms patterns for hours, like a human machine. Analog synthesizers complement his fervent and unusual piano technique, with the instrument prepared using objects placed on the strings to modify its sound.
He has released more than 30 records (albums and EPs) on French and international labels such as Bureau B, Optimo, Involve, Raster, Odd/Even, Blackstrobe, La Machina, and Airfono. These works, created both solo and with formations such as Cabaret Contemporain and the Magnetic Ensemble, include the LP The Explosion. His solo albums, including The Pianist, have received critical acclaim in both national and international press.
He also performs with Cabaret Contemporain (“techno without machines”) and in duo with Étienne Jaumet, as well as in the ambient trio My End Is My Beginning. In 2026, he received a commission from IRCAM / Centre Pompidou to create Memoria.
